Inktober thus far

This is my third year doing Inktober. If you don’t know what Inktober is, you can read about it here. I really recommend doing it if you’re an artist who likes to experiment with different mediums, like I do—it’s a great way to play around with different kinds of pens and markers!

I went into this Inktober intending to not follow the prompts, unlike last year. Instead, I made myself a schedule of various prompt topics (e.g. the first five days of the month would be heraldry, the next five would be insects, etc.) My plan with this was to force myself to step out of my comfort zone, which consists mainly of animals and anthropomorphic animals.

Unfortunately, my brilliant plan backfired, because I just wasn’t inspired (especially when it got to insects. Meh.). This is a little disappointing, because I really do want my artistic abilities to be well-rounded, but I guess I’m not quite there yet. So I’ve now cancelled my prompt schedule and am instead drawing whatever I feel like drawing (which so far has only consisted of one anthro! Yay, right?). Also, I have missed a few days thus far, but it’s okay. I’ll put my nose back to the grindstone next Inktober.

All right, enough backstory. Here’s what I’ve got so far.

Day #1: Heraldic unicorn

(Inspired by the unicorn on the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom.)

Day #2: “The Union and the Constitution Forever”

Day #3: Winged hand. This one turned out a little weird, but whatever.

(Inspired by an image that sadly I have been unable to find again, but it was similar to this.)

Day #4: Heraldic lion. Yeah, his expression came out a little…crazy. But hey, no one in medieval times ever complained!

(Inspired by the top left image in this set.)

Day #5: Knight and dog. This one is one of my favorites so far.

(Based on this image.)

Day #6: Dragonfly

(Inspired by an image similar to this one. Dang, I really need to keep better track of my references.)

Day #7: Beetle. Another of my favorites, mostly because I really like art like this.

(Based on an image similar to this.)

Day #11: Chatham. Now I start losing my focus, lol. Luckily, I picked it back up during church, and beautiful Chatham (a character in Foxhunt) was the result.

Day #12: Clown cat

(Based on a Halloween-themed candle we own.)

Day #13: Ghost train. Another favorite. The perspective here was just so much fun!

(Based on a Halloween-themed figurine we own.)

Day #15: Tartan blanket. A little lopsided, but hey, since when is a blanket ever perfectly straight? Also, I’d never done anything like this before. It was fun to play around with nothing but color.

(Based on a blanket we own.)

And that’s it so far! Are you doing Inktober this year?

  1. We all know that the lion was looking all regal and serious, then went 😛 right as you were about to take his picture.
You’re doing great so far! Keep it up!
