Inklings linkup | February 2021

Hello, everyone! Today I’m participating in another of Heidi @ Along the Brandywine’s events—this one being a linkup based on a specific prompt. Here are the rules, and the prompt is “A snow scene in a book or film.” Right, I have my scene in mind, so let’s get started!

Okay, so, a lot of different scenes (mostly from movies) came to mind for this prompt. Snow seems to be a prevalent element in films, and there are lots of really great scenes—both happy and sad, tranquil and intense—that involve it. But eventually, I decided on a scene from…

Brother Bear!

Firstly, if you’re not familiar with Brother Bear, it’s a Disney movie about an Inuit boy named Kenai who gets turned into a bear by the spirits and goes on a journey of self-discovery. Secondly, if you haven’t seen it, you need to. Seriously, don’t be dissuaded by the fact that Disney doesn’t pay much attention to it—Brother Bear is a fantastic movie. It’s got relatable characters, beautiful animation, and an awesome soundtrack. I’m dying for it to be remade in live-action-style like The Lion King was! (And! Bonus! Joaquin Phoenix is the voice of Kenai! 😀 )

*cough* Anyway. Back to the prompt.

The scene I selected takes place about two-thirds of the way through the film. It happens to be a sad snowy scene, as it features Kenai telling Koda, a bear cub who he’s taken under his wing temporarily, that he is responsible for the death of Koda’s mother. The scene is overlaid with the song “No Way Out” by Phil Collins, and is utterly heartbreaking.

“…I have a story to tell you.” “Really? What’s it about?” “Well, it’s kind of about a man. And kind of about a bear. But mostly it’s about a monster.”
Everywhere I turn, I hurt someone. But there’s nothing I can say to change the things I’ve done.
I’d do anything within my power. I’d give everything I’ve got. But the path I seek is hidden from me now.
“Koda, I did something very wrong.”
“I don’t like this story.”
“Your mother’s not coming.”
Of all the things I hid from you, I cannot hide the shame.
And I pray someone, something, will come to take away the pain.
There’s no way out of this dark place.
No hope. No future.
I know I can’t be free.
“Koda!”
“If there was just some way…”
“I’d give anything if I could just…”
“I’m sorry, Koda. I’m so sorry.”

*nods solemnly and dabs at my eyes with a tissue* Yup. That’s my pick. Overflowing with emotion and sporting beautiful muted colors, this clip from Brother Bear is one of the saddest snowy scenes known to film, and also one of my favorites.

Thanks for reading! What’s one of your favorite snowy scenes? And have you seen Brother Bear? Be sure to check out Heidi’s Inklings post—there’s still time to participate in the linkup!
